Gigaliner-lobby copies No Mega Trucks concept

10 Feb 2009. Recently the No Mega Trucks platform got a copycat with a website by mega truck supporters. With the slogan “green and lean” the website modularsystem.eu claims environmental benefits by mega trucks, even though this has already been disproved by several independent studies. The risks to traffic safety that mega trucks would cause are not mentioned with a single word by the authors of the web page.

Danish, Swedish and Dutch truck transport associations take position as Gigaliner-supporters on the website. Also the companies Michelin and TNT reveal themselves as mega truck friends. The concentration on Scandinavia and the Netherlands is not much of a surprise. In Sweden mega trucks are permitted for some time, Denmark gave green lights for Gigaliners in November 2008 and the Netherlands have carried out a series of LHV tests disguised as a so-called ‘experience phase’.

The array of supporters unveils the strong special interests that promote a Europe-wide permission of longer, heavier trucks. Scandinavian and Dutch haulier associations together with the truck manufacturers push for a long time to be allowed to drive their mega trucks through whole Europe.
