The great majority of citizens oppose the introduction of mega trucks.
The German government apparently does not expect the start of the nationwide Gigaliner-trials before 2011. This came out in an interview by the German transport magazine Verkehrsrundschau with State Secretary Andreas Scheuer. Scheuer said that he personally sees the launch of the mega truck trials first in 2011.
Before the trials the "impact on the infrastructure - such as the diameter of roundabouts or motorway-exits – has to be managed locally." A flowery description therefore that the use of mega trucks will require significant investments in infrastructure - at the taxpayers expense of course. In Denmark for example, funds formerly intended for cycling lanes, were transferred to extend the roads for mega trucks.
Clear in any case is that the German government is not giving up and is pushing its plans for the use of Gigaliners further. According to Scheuer the government is already busy negotiating the trials with the federal states.
