The great majority of citizens oppose the introduction of mega trucks.
The European parliament has already voiced its opposition to longer and heavier vehicles on several occasions, even if though this was at times only with a slight majority:
In April 2007 just before the EU Transport Committee voted on the mid-term review of the White Paper on Transport, a Swedish MEP and Gigaliner supporter tried to get an amendment added. His request was rejected.
In May 2007, the EU Transport Committee debated a parliamentary report 'European freight transport logistics – the key to sustainable mobility', which was not in favour of 60 tonne vehicles. In the debate, opponents of mega trucks were in a clear majority.
In July 2007, amendments favouring Gigaliners were rejected on three occasions – the Barsi-Pataky Report, the evaluation of the First Railway Package and the Ayala-Sender Report.
