Research by TIM Consult

In September 2006, the consultancy TIM Consult looked into the effects that permitting Gigaliners would have on combined transport. The research was commissioned by the Brussels based International Union of Combined Road-Rail Transport Companies (UIRR), and the German company Kombiverkehr.

The Experts came to the following conclusions:

  • 56% of the approximately 50 million tonnes of goods that are currently transported in Germany using the combined transport system of rail and road could be lost if Gigaliners were permitted.

  • That would mean a modal shift of up to 1.3 million heavy goods vehicle journeys back onto German trunk roads.

  • Two fast-growing segments would be particularly affected: the transport of deep sea containers from the ports and European transit traffic.
